More iSight Video Tricks

BTV Further Expands iSight Capabilities
Another useful software compliment for your iSight is Ben Software's BTV and BTV Pro. These Carbonized applications are more refined than iRecordNow and more versatile than QuickTime Broadcaster.
The standard version enables movie capture with the iSight and provides a full menu of controls such as frame size, frame rate, color adjustment, exposure compensation, choice of compressor, focus override, and more. You also have lots of options in the sound settings panel too.
Beyond that, BTV has still image capture, allows you to work with multiple monitors, and has AppleScript support too. There are also lots of nice touches such as user-programmable keystroke short cuts and a "delay" command for still image captures that is essentially a fully-configurable self-timer. Very nice.
The BTV interface isn't as intriguing as iRecordNow's, but it certainly gets the job done. You have a preview window accompanied by a floating palette that contains the capture controls.
|
|
The quality of capture is very good, and you have the option for BTV to open your movie in QuickTime immediately after you stop recording so you can review the footage. Another nice touch is the video info box that's like a dynamic "Get Info" for your iSight.
|
|
If you want even more functionality than the standard edition of BTV, you can try BTV Pro. Additional goodies include time lapse capture, motion detection capture, stop motion animation, and DV device control. The Pro version allows you to do just about anything with your iSight that you can visualize.
Tip! Time Lapse Photography with BTV Pro
I remember as a kid being blown away by time lapse photography that featured subjects such as a butterfly emerging from a cocoon. With BTV Pro and your iSight you can now create the very same footage.
For testing, find an easy subject such as a rose (in a vase, not outside) that's about ready to open. Set up your subject and your computer in a well lit area that receives plenty of natural light through out the day. Configure BTV Pro for time lapse capture. Start with the settings in the image below.
|
|
After you've completed 10 hours of capture, review your movie and make further adjustments. With a little trial and error, you can produce eye-popping productions just like those you see on nature shows.
Keep an Eye on Things with SecuritySpy
Whether it's who's knocking at the front door keeping an eye on the newborn, surveillance cams have many practical uses outside of airports and convenience stores. Because of it's low light recording capabilities and fast autofocus lens, the iSight is perfect for these types of applications. All you need is the right software.
One intriguing entry into the surveillance game is SecuritySpy, which not only lets you turn your iSight into a second set of eyes, it even lets you use multiple iSights from various locations all monitored on one Mac. There's a motion detection setting that can automatically trigger recording video to disc for review later, or you can enable time lapse imaging for specific periods or around the clock.

Tip! Get an Email When Motion Is Detected
Yes, with just about any webcam software you can upload pictures to a web server to see what's going on at any given time. But most often all you'll see is a lifeless image that never changes.
By using SecuritySpy's email notification function, you can forget about checking web pages and concentrate more on matters at hand. Configure SecuritySpy so that it sends you an email when a camera detects motion. You can have this mail sent to your text pager, SmartPhone (with email functionality), or your regular email account (which can then include a photo attachment).
If you receive a notification, simply review the photo attachment (with a computer email client), or log on to any computer and match the notification time with the time lapse recorded image saved to the server.
Pricing for iRecordNow, BTV, and SecuritySpy
All of these applications run on Mac OS X, and BTV and SecuritySpy also work on OS 9 with CarbonLib loaded.
- During the preview trial period, iRecordNow is a free download if you apply for the license. Once version 1.0 is released, it will cost $14.95 US.
- Both the standard and Pro versions of BTV can be downloaded for free and evaluated for 15 days. After that period, BTV costs $20 US and BTV Pro is $40.
- You can download and use SecuritySpy for free for 30 days. After that period, it will cost you $50 US for a single camera license, $100 for a four-camera license, and $200 for unlimited cameras.
Final Frame
The iSight packs much more power than most users initially realize. With a little ingenuity and experimentation, plus the help of applications such as iRecordNow, BTV, and SecuritySpy, you can create movies and capture footage in a variety of situations. Your beautiful little iSight will be transformed from a decorative hood ornament to a full-fledged movie making machine.

Multiple Camera Support?
2005-07-21 05:08:29 pukwudgee [Reply | View]
Does anyone know of a way to record multiple camera streams simultaneously? I need to do motion capture of an athlete from 3 axes, and need small, light cameras. Assuming the hardware were up to the job of recording 3 video streams, is there any software that will manage it? It would be nice to disable the audio recording too (free up some resources).

FYI: 2-for-1 iSights!

I just got back from the Apple Driven By Design seminar, and they are handing out 2-for-1 iSight coupons! If you live near a major city and can get to an Apple store, check out the seminar schedule:
http://seminars.apple.com/tours/drivenbydesign/
(Also a cool place to see Panther demos, as well as all of Adobe's new CS suite... if you're creative, do attend!)

there is also a program from subrosasoft.com called HomeGuardian that seems to have quite a few nifty features. Has anyone compared this to evocam and SecuritySpy?

Background Motion Detection
2003-10-03 09:43:10 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
I've looked at several applications that do motion capture (including Security Spy and EvoCam) but none of them will work unless a user is logged in. Does anyone know of an app that will work in the background (i.e from the command line)?

I've looked at several pieces of software that do motion detection (including Security Spy and EvoCam) but all of the ones I've found require that a user be logged in. Has anyone found one that will run in the background (i.e. from the command line)?

iStopMotion and Still Digi Cams
2003-10-03 04:16:19 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
Is is possible to hook up a regular digital stills camera to iStopMotion? I'd love to be able to capture higher quality frames using my Olympus E-20 (which has a USB connection). I have tried but haven't been able to make it work. Any suggestions???

cool, but what i really want to do is....
2003-09-24 11:01:21 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
use my i sight as a speaker phone. imagine having the phone line plugged into your mac and dialing from your address book and on screen caller id/answer functionality. the audio input from the i sight is terrific. i know this is not so i sight dependant or related but it is something i would love to use.
good article btw, also if any one knows of a mac speakerphone app please reply.
thanks -

I know this isn't exactly what you're asking for, but you might want to take a look at PhoneValet. It's pretty cool...

Time Lapse Movies
2003-09-24 06:36:17 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
Derrick,
Thanks for another great article! I must say that I find your pieces on digital media on the MacDevCenter superb. It's great to have such a practical emphasis.
One thing that did suprise me about this piece was that you didn't mention Boinx's iStopMotion <www.istopmotion.com>, which, in the most basic form, is free. They have an excellent set of pages on their site, full of enthusiasm, about time lapse photography.
Having used iStopMotion, but not BTV (which sounds excellent), I would have been interested in a comparison between the two. Any thoughts?
Anyway, here's to lots more stuff on digital media on the Mac - perhaps even a Quicktime Cookbook or QuickTime Hacks book!
Cheers!
Martin. -

Actually, I'm very aware of iStopMotion. The only reason why I didn't cover it in this piece, or have written specifically about it (yet), is because they have entered the Mac OS X Innovators Contest, and we're in the final stages of judging the third round. I could, however, write about iRecordNow because it isn't an entry (although they probably should have entered it). Once the winners are announced in October at the Mac OS X Conference, all bets are off and I can cover some of these apps I've been sitting on.

Very inspiring...

Hi,
Your last articles on O'Reilly about iSight were indeed very inspiring: during Apple Expo (Paris), our wifi group broadcasted - live - their footage, with iSight of course.
Three iSight, two Titanium, two 12" PowerBook and two iBook were used for this, as long as two 8dB omni antennas and a D-link 802.11g wireless router. Basic stuff.
You can check the pictures here:
http://www.toiledequartier.org/pmach/quar/phot/galerie.php
And the first video is here:
http://www.5-6.org/galerie/apple_expo/wifimens_balade.mov
And yes, it's an iSight on top of my winged-helmet...
Please, keep in mind that this is our first attempt (with no rehearsal); I'm pretty sure we could achieve something much better by tinkering the numerous settings involved. :)

I can't believe I overlooked the "iSight mounted atop a winged-helmet" hack. Great stuff and one of the best looks at the expo floor in Paris I've seen. Also, nice job on the post production. The "Fast Start" worked really well and I was able to watch the movie after only downloading a MB or so.

iDea for iSight
2003-09-23 16:27:45 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
What if Apple added the ability to control the iSight when it is hooked to an iPod thru firewire? You would have a cheap digital camcorder. You can store about 60 minutes of DV footage on 13GB so the new 40GB iPod could record about 3 hours of footage, far surpassing miniDV's 60 minutes.

iDea for iSight

that is a *SWEET* idea! i was just thinking about how the paris expo footage helmet idea would been much easier to capture without the bulk of a laptop... man, i hope apple does that. -
iDea for iSight
2003-10-23 20:16:47 anonymous2 [Reply | View]
now thats a good ass idea
once you transfer the dv stream to the mac you could save a step in transfering the video from the camera
what you need is a script that would get the video out and automatically sense the camera stops and put it in a folder and you could have sorenson squeeze (with watch folder) squeeze it.
maybe belkin can come up with something like this seems pretty simple, ipod to firewire adapter

I know we're sort of horsing around here, which I like, but heck, right now the smallest device we have to plug the iSight into is a 12" AiBook or iBook. Smaller would be better. If someone comes up with something, please post here! -

I guess we are all thinking along these lines, why isn't apple. Here's what my deviant little mind came up with when I saw the iPod photo...

I bet more than a few of you were thinking the same thing.
